Rub bit with butter or olive oil before first use: soaks into the leather and makes it soft and is more palatable to horse than leather oil.

Care: The leather bit is easy to keep supple by rubbing it regularly with a little olive oil or butter (not leather oil, as it does not taste good). Make sure the stitching faces the outside, i.e. the front of the horse/opening of the mouth. Horse teeth are considerably harder than leather and can shorten the life of a leather mouthpiece. If the bit is on the layers correctly, damage to the mouthpiece is quite unlikely, but not impossible due to too sharp teeth. So check the bit regularly for damage.
